HereintheMiddleEasttheboyshavehadmuchexposuretoculturesthattheyhaven't previouslyencountered, which I love. JustthismorningLukasmadefriendswithAdam, a 3-and-a-halfyearoldBritishboywithEgyptianroots. ThentherewerethemenfromIndiain a parkinDeira (which I wroteaboutonourtravelfocused blog), thehandsomelittleArabicboysonJuneirahBeachMonday, andtheflirtatiousyounggirlsattheRitzCarltonpooljustyesterday. Andfour-year-oldsaredyingtounderstandhowtheworldworks. Justbeforehisafternoonnap (whichhenowtakesonlyonoccasion), camethefollowingclusterofquestions, "Mama, howcanyoucatch a worm? Mama, whyis a gunshotnotgoodforyou? Mama, howcanyoucatch a frog? Mama, isthereSpring, Summer, FallandWinter? AndMama, whichoneistherain?"
AsforAlex, peopleseemmesmorizedbythelightskinned, light-hairedbabyrunningaroundinthemallsandatthebeach (whichisstrange, giventheamountofWesternersinDubai). Somehaveevenaskedtohavepictureswithourkids, which I obviouslyrefused (that's just a bitweird, sorry). A coupledaysagohefellclumsillytothefloorinthekitchen, whichwasfollowedby "Papa, Al-lafalldown!" (meaningofcourse, "Alexfalldown!"). That's thelongeststringofwordsAlexhasusedsofar, sowewereecstatic.
His somewhat limited word roster includes "Loveyou", "eat", "bat", "swim, swim", "Oh-day" (for "Okay"), "HelpYOO", "WOW!" (usuallyfoodrelated), "Why?" and quite a few other words. But hisvocabularyisgrowingexponentiallybytheday, andhelovessinginghisfavoritesong, OldMcDonald - "Eee-Eye-Eee-Eye-Oooh!". It's suchanamazingage!!!
Having said that, perhapsthemostwonderfulrewardofallissimplywatchingthebondcontinuetogrowbetweenbrothers. Ifwe'regoingsomewhereandthey'rebothwalking, theywalkhand-in-hand. Alexpreferstoholdhisbrother's handoverhisMamaorPapa's byfar, andhehassuchanadmirationforhisolderbrother.

Lastly, we'vedone a lotofthingsduringourtimeherethat I hopetheboyswillrememberfor a longtimetocome. Sometimes I feellikeourlife - withallthetravelinginvolved - is a bitoutofcontrol, like a runawayfreighttrain. Butthen I lookaroundmeand I see - andreadabout - wonderfulworldlypeoplewhose travels as children played a major role in who they are today. Whichgetsmetowondering, what'smoreof a disservice, totraveltoomuchwithchildren, ortotraveltoolittle?
So how are Mama and Papa coping with all the changes? Well,Tobi's workingtoomuchandstudyingfor a bigexam (for his MBA) inhis "freetime" and I'm adjustingto a veryshortstintintheMiddleEastbymeetingotherExpatMommies (checkouttheJumeirahBeachResidence's Sandpitgrouponfacebook - AKA "JBRSandpitPlaygroup"). Whenindoubt, findotherpeoplethataregoingwhatyou'regoingthrough. It's incrediblycomforting! [shewrites, smiling] I hopetojumpbackintosomeseriouspitchwritingandbrainstormingwithinthenextmonth, butfornow, I'lljustcontinuetogetmyselfasfamiliarwiththeUAEas I can, researchinghotels, resorts, restaurants, child-friendlyattractions, andEmiratiecultureas a whole.
Theworldisbrimmingwithincredibleculturesandexperiences, muchlike a fountain, andourchildren, wellthey'resoakingupeverypreciousbitofitlikethelittlehumanspongesthattheyare. It's thejourneyof a lifetime.
